Jamshedpur Eye Hospital has envisioned a technology and infrastructure revamp costing an estimated Rs 2.74 crore.
The hospital, a familiar landmark in Sakchi, has decided to upgrade its existing technology and add one more operating theatre, beside the three already present, to cater to a larger number of patients.
The hospital, which turned 50 last year, also has plans to procure a B Scan (a hi-tech ophthalmic ultrasonography machine), phacoemulsification (a machine used for laser cataract surgeries) and autoclaves (a device used to sterilise equipment).
Hospital officials said that they had also mooted the idea of introducing a modern hospital information system where all data would be digitised and stored. As of now, only the administrative data of the hospital is digitally stored.
"We cater to a large number of patients daily, most of whom make their way to the city from rural areas for specialised treatment. The flow of patients has increased so much that we felt the needs of setting up another operating theatre with latest technology," said S.P. Jakhanw al, secretary and superintendent of Jamshedpur Eye Hospital.
Jakhanwal added they would also conduct awareness drives among the residents of the city.
"Most do not pay much attention to eye care," he rued.
The eye care centre will also tie up with various schools in the city to spread the message. The students will, in turn, educate both teachers and parents.
"We hold free camps and surgeries in the rural pockets of the state for the financially weaker sections. Our main focus will be to make parents and teachers aware about eye care for children, which are often neglected. The idea is to educate and help them identify symptoms of vision problems at the earliest. Most eye ailments can be cured if detected early," Jakhanwal said.
The hospital, which was inaugurated in 1961, started an eye donation centre last September, in turn receiving a life membership from the Eye Bank Association of India.
The state granted the hospital permission to perform organ transplantation surgery (removal of eyeball, storage of cornea and transplant) in 2010.
