New Delhi, June 18 (ANI): Former Indian cricketer Chetan Chauhan and Congress leader Digvijay Singh joined hands with activists and environmentalists in save River Ganga campaign here on Monday.
Chauhan, who participated in the campaign, urged the ruling Congress party led government to form a separate secretariat constituting scientists and experts, who would be accountable for the day to day working with regards to the cleaning of River Ganga.
"Look, as I have said that there should be a separate secretariat. The fund given to the ministry should be monitored. Scientists, who are experts in fighting pollution, should be hired by the secretariat. There should be day-to-day report of the work done by the secretariat. The officials should set an yearly target," he said.
Congress leader Digvijay Singh on his part said that he would join the protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, as he was an ardent supporter of Hindu saint Shankaracharya Saroopanand.
"In the save Ganga campaign, honourable Hindu saint Shankaracharya Saroopanand is participating, and I being his disciple will go to Jantar Mantar," he said.
Activists and Hindu saints gathered at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi earlier in the day, and urged the Central Government to ban building of any more dams across the River Ganga and to take adequate steps to restore its sanctity and purity.
A large number of people fighting for the River Ganga's cleanliness, pledged to launch a nationwide campaign against the government for failing to implement the promises made by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to ensure all possible steps to clean the river would be taken. (ANI)
