Calcuttans travelling abroad will now be able to receive calls without being charged, thanks to a SIM card that offers free incoming calls.
UK-based WorldSim launched its services in the city recently, promising "at least 20 to 25 per cent cheaper tariff for international roaming calls in the UK and other parts of Europe". The offer is valid across 90 countries.
"The service is particularly useful for corporates and frequent international travellers as well as for city students studying abroad. The card offers zero tariff for calls received in 90 countries," said Mohamed Saleem, vice-president, Hash10, the distributors of WorldSim in India.
In India, the WorldSim service was first launched in Chennai in 2010 and at present has around 20,000 subscribers in four cities.
"It's a single number SIM for all countries. One doesn't have to change numbers if they are travelling multiple sectors," Saleem said.
According to the officials, the SIM card has lifetime validity and is priced at Rs 2,999 which includes talk time of Rs 500. "To recharge, one can get in touch with dealers or log on to the WorldSim website (www.worldsim.com)," said Saleem.
He said the SIM cards will be available for purchase with tour operators.
People travelling to multiple countries have to buy calling cards if they are not using international roaming services. "These cards are mostly operational in a single country or city. Moreover, one can't receive calls using these cards," said Anil Punjabi, chairman (east), Travel Agents Federation of India (Tafi).
"If the WorldSim service is cheaper, then it can be sold along with a travel package to a client," he said.
