Imphal, Jan. 18: Income tax sleuths seized Rs 36.5 lakh in cash from a businessman at Thangal Bazar here.
A source said the sleuths conducted a raid at the busy Thangal Bajar shopping complex yesterday and seized Rs 36.5 lakh from a businessman.
Sources said the amount seized from the businessman was unaccounted for money and the income tax department is investigating if the amount seized was meant for distribution among voters.
Manipur will go to the polls on January 28 and under strict directives from the Election Commission, the state election office tied up with the income tax department to check use of black money by candidates and political parties.
"As part of our stepped up vigil, our teams can seize unaccounted for money. We are investigating into it. We also found Rs 10 crore in cash apparently belonging to the younger brother of the Imphal businessman. The younger brother is in Rajasthan. We have contacted our counterparts in Rajasthan and they are investigating into it," a government source said.
A police source said the city-based businessman was being interrogated.
