Get on with work, bury Army Chief age row: Antony

New Delhi, Feb 13 (ANI): Defence Minister A.K Antony on Monday demanded an end to the furore surrounding the age of Army Chief General Vijay Kumar Singh.

For national interest, please forget and bury this unfortunate controversy. It is over now. Let us all work together to strengthening our national security and in our mind national interest should be supreme. Whatever happened has happened, it is over now, it's buried now and government has confidence in the present chief," Antony told media here.

Asked if General Singh has offered to resign in the wake of the judgement, Antony said, "Government has confidence in the present chief."

"It is also very clear that we have even conveyed to the Supreme Court, everything is clear, we have confidence in him," he added.

General V K Singh had moved the Supreme Court on January 16 against the Indian government's decision to treat his date of birth as May 10,1950 instead of May 10,1951.

The next day, the government had filed a caveat in the Supreme Court against any ex-parte order on the petition of the General Singh, leading to a confrontation of sorts between the Army and the government.

The Supreme Court had ruled that the government decision on General Singh's date of birth will apply to his service matters, forcing him to withdraw his petition.

The apex court had, however, clarified that the judgement does not reflect on the competence and capability of the Army Chief. (ANI)

Elementary my dear Watson. Shoot a gun towards Pak. It might kill a Paki or if it hits mango a mango will fall. Both are beneficial.

what would have been the scenario if service record shows 1951 and Govt. find that High School certificate shows 1950
      • sumit 3 months ago
then the problem would not have risen even.

        I agree.

The army chief kept quite till he became the chief, after that he suddenly remembered 'Honour & Integrity'. Why did he agree to accept his D.O.B. as 1950 earlier? He wants best of both things!

Had he not agreed earlier, he would have gone home 04 years back without any fault on his part and with some disciplinary award. You do not know the power of establishment.

That is what Numero meant when he/she said "He wants best of both things"

Depending on whims, the Indian Hon. courts can decline to accept the universally accepted high-school certificate or decline to accept the contender's mere written statement . A recent case example manifests glorifies and testifies this aspect when the Hon’ble UttraKhand High Court at Nainital upheld (after intensive arguments) a reply to a RTI query made in the year 2007 that “an information pertaining to the year 1994 was more than twenty years old in the year 2007” (vide the Writ Petition No.726 of the year 2008) and such a whimsically arbitrary judgment could be given because the Hon’ble courts in India are not obliged to give reasons for their decision or judgment. SuperGodly whims manifest communist regime

There are more intricacies in the case than the date of birth or the school certificate.Superficial comments should not be posted. Many newspapers would be glad to publish thorough critical analysis of the case if sent to them.

Don't you also think it is high time everybody must keep corroborating evidence to prove his date of birth as high school certificate does not mean much.

The govt. and the judiciary have come up very badly in this entire episode. The govt. for keeping its records so badly reflects the inefficiency of its administration. Judiciary for the ridiculous judgement. For everybody (except the govt. and judiciary), their ssc certification or birth certificate is the proof of dob. However, for the govt. and judiciary alone the dob mentioned in some application form is important and sacrosanct. No doubt, Indians are afraid to take legal course to all their issues. When SC can be so inept in the judgement, shudder to think of HC and lower courts. Jai hind!!!

Sorry R, the case was not for determining the actual/real DOB of the General. Please understand that as per Army rules in force, they can not accept a new DOB, even if it true, which surfaces after 2 yrs of an officer's commissioning, for purposes of service conditions like promotion and retirement. In the present case, also consider the estoppels signed by the General at various stages for his recent promotions ! Did he have a case ?
      • R P 3 months ago
Anto...DOB is not determined. It is something that's accepted based on the certificate you provide. What were rules earlier might become redundant at a later point. We need to apply the rules that are relevant and appropriate to the time. For Indians, DOB on SSC certificate was sacrosanct previously and now it's the birth certificate. Any other DOB other than these should be disregarded summarily.

there should not have been any controversy regarding age proof of General,It is an established fact that in India the person's age proof is taken as entered in the High School Certificate, especially in earlier days when there used to be no record of birth certificate.Gen. Singh may have an unblemished record in his carrier, but it is clear that lately he wants to enjoy one more year of such a high post, otherwise ,why such claim of rectification/change of DOB at this stage of his carrier ?unnecessary lot of time and money have been lost. Now it is the moral duty of General to resign.

Natural for you to say so, Minister. Pride and honour are alien terms to all you politicians and bureaucrats. In your world, people can fight elections from inside jails. Can NDA candidates come from jails to appear for UPSC examination or Service Selection Boards?
And that mismatch is the actual problem, Mr Anthony. We should make the army like politics so that internal inconsistency is removed. We don't deserve the army we have.

Never before in the history of Indian Army a general who is the chief of the Army, fighting for himself and loosing in the court of law licks the boots of a corrupt government. What a shame for the general and what a shame for the Indian Army.

What a pity, now Antony saying to forget. The issue will not be so easily deleted from the memory of many Indians not to mention the officers and soldiers, serving or retired. It was a blow to the Army which shook all of us. Media may obey Antony's command, but what about others? I am still waiting for the news of the chief's to resignation.
      • Prince 3 months ago
Absolutely, Tara,he should have resigned by now for the sake of honour. Let us not forget here that the General had no case at all, in the first place ! And the Govt. was so sure of their case from the very beginning ! Any one with a rudimentory knowledge of Army regulations on the subject should know this. Who has egged the General to go on fighting a non-issue and at whose behest it was, should be explained for the Indian public by all who celebrated it in the last few weeks !

Ashamed to be an Indian today. This is all but one point agenda is to demoralize the army. The Congress ruling party has demoralized everybody, every section and every sector in the country. Army was the only area left which has been targetted now. Let us admit that democracy is finished in this country and welcome Gandhi Nehru family dynasty rule in the country. Let us wait and watch the day is not far off when the country will put under emergency once again and there will be Arajak - alongsie congress and the people voting corrupt parties will also be equally responsible for this. Aamin.

To save his honour and integrity, also to uphold the prestige of the glorious Indian army, Army Chief Gen VK Singh after having lost the battle of his DOB in the SC, he should put in his paers seeking retirement from the service, paving the way for the smooth succession in the chain.

This Anthony is going to be VKK, Sr and one of the worst. During 26/11, his navy was missing. During this "honest" minister's time, his ministry bought junk helicopters from the US and some important DM files were found in Delhi streets. If most disgraceful 26/11 has not taught lessons wait for disasters worse than 1962 Indo-China war!!! FYI: VKK did similar things on most useless Maj Gen Kaul's promotion to Lt. Gen.

the court should have gone by the law of natural justice and NOT pointing fingres on the mistakes of individual committed under duress and pressure.

The fact that the General has not resigned immediately after the supreme court verdict clearly shows that the chief does not want to leave the seat.A huge trust deficit was created between him and the Govt. the day when he went to court. The ill advisers who advised him to go to court should immediately advise him to resign and leave gracefully. The more he continues in office, the more his image will deteriorate.
