London, Feb 20 (IANS) A charity shop in Britain faced a strange situation when it witnessed rich families, looking for a bargain, thronging in response to its offer of tins of an upmarket paint.
The 58-pound five-litre tins of Farrow & Ball paint were going for just five pounds.
Wealthy homeowners couldn't believe their luck, as one of them bought 40 litres for just 40 pounds, saving himself 424 pounds, the Daily Express reported.
The designer tins had been donated to help the needy via the charity Community RePaint and were being sold by the Tree of Life store in a run-down area of Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester.
"It is a shame some people have been so mean-spirited," said manager Janet Price.
To prevent homeowners from one of Britain's wealthiest areas cashing in, the shop now insists customers provide proof they are on benefits. Eligible customers are also limited to three tins.
Farrow & Ball director Sarah Cole said: "Donations are made for charities and those on a low income. Farrow & Ball trusts Community RePaint to distribute paint accordingly."
