New Delhi, Dec 1 (ANI): Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat on Saturday urged the Government of India to come to the rescue of Indian couple in Norway, who have been arrested in an alleged child abuse case and charged with 'gross repeated maltreatment' of their son.
Karat said the attitude of the Norwegian authorities pertaining to this case is really dubious and questionable.
"And I don't think it is in line with any of the international conventions, which either India or Norway have signed because how can it be in a case when the child authorities are saying they are very good parents. The children were given back to their parents and then after four months the parents are rested on new charge. So, either the authorities were totally wrong in giving the children back or what they have done is completely bizarre," said Karat.
"The point is this is gross injustice and the Government of India must act urgently in this particular case, which is the most bizarre case and help the couple. We also need to raise it in the relevant international forum because this is completely against the child rights and the rights of the families," she added.
Software professional Chandrasekhar Vallabhaneni and his wife Anupama have been arrested by the Oslo Police on November 26 for alleged abuse of their seven-year-old son.
The Andhra Pradesh couple has reportedly been remanded in custody, as there is reason to fear that they will evade prosecution by returning to India.
Chandrasekhar works with software giant TCS, which deputed him to Oslo 18 months ago to handle a project. He took his wife and two sons with him. His older son allegedly told his teachers that his parents had threatened to send him back to India.
According to reports, Anupama's father has appealed to the Government of India to intervene into the matter. He has also written a letter to the government in this regard.
This incident comes barely months after another Indian couple in Norway, Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya, were involved in a prolonged custody battle with Norwegian authorities after their two children, Abhigyan and Aishwarya, were taken away by child welfare services in May last year. (ANI)
