Bollywood box-office report of the week

By Abid, Glamsham Editorial

This week will see an interesting clash between Kunal Kohli's Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra starrer, TERI MERI KAHAANI and Anurag Kashyap's GANGS OF WASSEYPUR. While the two films are not of a similar genre, and apparently unlike to cut into each other but still, the business is likely to be loaded in favour of GOW in the interiors (and the Hindi belt), while multiplexes and youths will be inclined in favour of TMK, and hence divided.

Last week's major release, Vidhu Vinod Chopra's FERRARI KI SAWAARI, had a slowish start on the first day and a small pick up on the second day. The Rajesh Mapuskar directed film did see a pronounced jump in collections on Sunday, and as we had had said (in our Saturday update), it brightens the commercial prospects of the Sharman-Boman starrer. The best business obviously comes from the Mumbai circuit. Unfortunately for FERRARI KI SAWAARI the film has been hit hard by the still strong ROWDY RATHORE (though the film is running in the third week). FERRARI KI SAWAARI has also done decently in the overseas (especially US) grossing and#163;81,000 from UK and $ 241,000 in the US, during the opening weekend (15-17 June).

Needless to add that the other two releases of the week, The New Mumbai Talkies and Whispering Shadows Entertainment's QASAM SE QASAM SE and Sir JVM Movies' CHAKRADHAAR, failed to appeal to the audience and are washouts.

Meanwhile Dibakar Banerjee's Farooque Shaikh, Emraan Hashmi, Abhay Deol, Pitobash Tripathy and Kalki Koechlin starrer, SHANGHAI, may not have found universal acceptance (nor was it expected to!) but it did well in the good multiplexes of big cities. The film could not make a mark at the single screens though. During the week, SHANGHAI collected 3.20 crore from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 85 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 15 lakhs from Surat (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 15 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 6.75 lakhs from Rajkot, 35 lakhs from Pune, 10 lakhs from Nasik, 5 lakhs from Goa, 2.50 crore from Delhi city, 35 lakhs from Noida, 15 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 11 lakhs from Kanpur, 23.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.25 lakhs from Agra, 6.25 lakhs from Allahabad, 60 lakhs from Gurgaon, 6 lakhs from Faridabad, 2 lakhs from Kurukshetra, 3.35 lakhs from Panipat, 13 lakhs from Chandigarh, 6.55 lakhs from Jalandhar, 3.20 lakhs from Amritsar, 3 lakhs from Ludhiana, 2.60 lakhs from Bhatinda, 2 lakhs from Ambala, 70 lakhs from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 4 lakhs from Siliguri, 20 lakhs from Nagpur, 5.55 lakhs from Jabalpur, 14 lakhs from Raipur, 25 lakhs from Indore, 3.50 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 7.50 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 35 lakhs from Jaipur, 1.50 lakhs from Jodhpur (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 2.50 lakhs from Ajmer, 2.10 lakhs from Bikaner, 6 lakhs from Kota, 5.75 lakhs from Udaipur, 50 lakhs from Hyderabad, 4 lakhs from Aurangabad (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 76 lakhs from Bangalore, 1.15 lakhs from Vijayawada, 2.75 lakhs from Visakhapatnam, 5.25 lakhs from Madras (collections from other cinemas unreceived) and 2 lakhs from Kochi. With a satisfactory (in the wake of ROWDY RATHORE tsunami) 17.75 crores during the opening week, SHANGHAI is an average grosser. The film though has been rejected in the overseas.

Concluding with UTV Motion Pictures and Bhansali Productions' Prabhu Dheva directed 72 crore (all inclusive cost) ROWDY RATHORE, the film continues its rock steady run, even in the second week, as it collected 2.85 crore from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 2 crore from Ahmedabad, 1 crore from Surat, 65 lakhs from Baroda, 20 lakhs from Rajkot, 33 lakhs from Pune, 20.50 lakhs from Nasik, 6.15 lakhs from Goa, 1.20 crore from Delhi city, 35 lakhs from Noida, 27.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 30 lakhs from Kanpur, 50 lakhs from Lucknow, 18 lakhs from Agra, 12.55 lakhs from Allahabad, 3 lakhs from Aligarh, 37.60 lakhs from Gurgaon, 9 lakhs from Faridabad, 4 lakhs from Kurukshetra, 6.50 lakhs from Panipat, 17.65 lakhs from Chandigarh, 10.50 lakhs from Jalandhar, 5.50 lakhs from Amritsar, 4.50 lakhs from Ludhiana, 6.50 lakhs from Bhatinda, 3 lakhs from Ambala, 42 lakhs from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 6.70 lakhs from Siliguri, 40 lakhs from Nagpur, 18.20 lakhs from Jabalpur, 25 lakhs from Raipur, 42 lakhs from Indore (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 6.65 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 28 lakhs from Bhopal, 90 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 4.35 lakhs from Jodhpur (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 12.25 lakhs from Ajmer, 7.65 lakhs from Bikaner, 12.30 lakhs from Kota, 14.30 lakhs from Udaipur, 35.50 lakhs from Hyderabad, 13.50 lakhs from Aurangabad (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 33.50 lakhs from Bangalore, 2 lakhs from Visakhapatnam and 2 lakhs from Madras (collections from other cinemas unreceived). Adding another 34 crores, ROWDY RATHORE has netted a huge 112 crores in two weeks from India and the Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha starrer all set to be blockbuster hit by the next week. What must be kept in mind is that the satellite (35 crore) and audio rights (5 crore) have already been recovered. The film may have performed below potential in the overseas (for an Akshay Kumar starrer), but has still managed substantial numbers grossing and#163;420,500 from UK and $ 745,000 from the US till the third weekend (15-17 June).
