  • Athirathram – The oldest Vedic ritual

A 12-day ritual is about to come to a grand, majestic end in a little village in Kerala as we speak. Athirathram, or Atiratra Agnicayana, a 3000-year-old (some say 4000) Vedic ritual to cleanse the earth and ring in global peace is reaching its culmination in Panjal, a sleepy hamlet home to Namboodiri Brahmins in Trichur, Kerala, the sect that earns the right to perform this ritual by birth.

Modern day Hinduism has its spiritual origins in the Vedic religion; this particular ritual is said to be the oldest and perhaps the greatest of all Vedic rituals that still continue to be performed today. A bird-shaped altar is built with 10,800 bricks for the ritual, which is an offering to Agni or the God of Fire. As you'd know, the number 108 has special significance in Hindu faith. This ritual, never witnessed by outsiders till 1956, caught the attention of a Sanskrit professor/philosopher of European origin, Frits Staal, who is credited with bringing global awareness to Athirathram, which

  • On March 19th 2011, the moon will make its closest approach to Earth in almost 20 years, possibly triggering earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other disasters, claims astrologer Richard Nolle.
The phenomenon, called lunar perigee or Supermoon, happens when the moon reaches its absolute closest point to Earth. On March 19, the natural satellite will be only 221,567 miles away from our planet.

There were Supermoons in 1955, 1974, 1992 and 2005, and these years had their share of extreme weather conditions, too. Although there are scientific laws that say the moon affects the Earth, it's still ambiguous whether the lunar perigee and natural disasters is coincidence or not.

Two days after online warnings that the Supermoon might trigger disasters, the devastating Japanese tsunami forced everyone to think - could the movement of the moon cause natural calamities?

"Supermoons have a historical association with strong storms, very high tides, extreme tides and also earthquakes," the Daily

  • A newly released video shows a 360-degree view of the smoking towers from the vantage point of a NYPD helicopter, soon afterward the Sept. 11 World Trade Center attack .

Taken from a police helicopter hovering above the doomed towers, the video is part of a cache of information from the attack handed over to the National Institute of Standards and Technology under the US Freedom of Information Act.

Although the 16-minute clip doesn't show the collapse of the first tower, it does record the officers' reaction immediately afterwards.

Only police helicopters were allowed in the airspace near the skyscrapers, and the officers were the only ones shooting images from above.

  • The most typical face on the planet

How many times have you walked on the road and had a deja vu experience with people's faces. Let's face it, many people look like many people!

Keeping this in mind, National Geographic has come up with the most common looking face in the world. Take a look at this report:

National Geographic Magazine released a video clip, below, showing the most "typical" human face on the planet as part of its series on the human race called "Population 7 billion."

The researchers conclude that a male, 28-year-old Han Chinese man is the most typical person on the planet. There are 9 million of them.

The image above is a composite of nearly 200,000 photos of men who fit that description.

But here comes the most interesting observation they have made:

Don't get used to the results, however. Within 20 years, the most typical person will reside in India.

    And now, your thoughts!

  • Of late, Pope Benedict XVI has earned the title of 'Green Pope' for his continuous efforts to reduce environmental footprint. He had photovoltaic cells installed on the roof of a Vatican auditorium in 2008, followed by a solar cooling unit to the Vatican cafeteria. Now, Pope Benedict wants to take another step towards a greener environment with a solar-powered Popemobile. The Vatican says that a solar Pope transporter would be a rolling tribute to the Pontiff's message to promote sustainable energy.

According to sources, German-based firm, SolarWorld, has offered to fulfil the Pope's dream, but chances are very less that they get thumbs up from the Vatican security apparatus. The prime concern will be how fast a solar Popemobile can take off if there are any security incidents. However, SolarWorld marketing chief Milan Nitzschke said that electric cars can accelerate just as quickly as traditional cars, and can go from 0-100 km/h in three seconds.

    Whether or not the Pope's
