BJP gives ticket to former Gujarat Minister Amit Shah

Ahmedabad, Nov. 28 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, announced that the former Home Minister and accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsi Prajapati alleged fake encounter cases, Amit Shah will contest upcoming assembly elections from Naranpura constituency.

Known to be very close to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Shah had spent three months in jail and was ordered by court not to return to Ahmedabad.

However, the Supreme Court allowed him to return in September this year, rejecting a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) plea to cancel the bail granted to him.

Reacting to the BJP stand Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said that now the people of Gujarat should think about the BJP and leaders like Amit Shah.

Another Congress leader Jagdambika Pal said that the BJP's decision to give ticket to a leader who had to resign from the office of Home Minister following murder charges against him, has exposed the party and its ideology.

Amit Shah had won the last assembly elections from Sarkhej with a vote margin even bigger than that of Modi. Sarkhej has, after delimitation, been split into three constituencies, one of which is Naranpura, from where the party has given ticket to Shah.

Sohrabuddin Shaikh, an alleged gangster, and his wife Kauser Bi, were allegedly abducted by Gujarat's Anti-Terrorism Squad from Hyderabad and murdered in a fake encounter near Gandhinagar in November 2005. The police also allegedly killed Tulsiram Prajapati, a witness, in December 2006. (ANI)
