BJP asks government not to politicise Afzal's execution for political gain

New Delhi, Feb. 10 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday asked the Congress party and the UPA Government not to politicise the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru for any political gain.

BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said the government will face people's ire if it indeed attempts at politicising the matter or calls for early polls.

"We hope the Congress party is not playing politics on this matter. If does make an attempt at politicising the issue and calls for early polls, then the Congress should know that it will face public rage over the incumbent situation of high inflation, deep rooted corruption, compromises with national security, faltering in taking action against Hafiz Saeed, allowing culprits of 26/11 to roam around freely and resuming dialogue with Pakistan," said Prasad.

"As per the procedure of law, this execution should have been done long ago but has been delayed by over seven years. They need to understand this. If the Congress tries to politically exploit the matter then the nation is desperately waiting to throw the UPA out of power," he added.

He stressed that the government must practice 'zero tolerance' policy in dealing with militancy.

Afzal Guru, who was hanged in Tihar Jail here on in the early morning on Saturday, was convicted of conspiracy in the December 2001 attack on Parliament and was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in 2004.

On 13th December 2001, five heavily-armed gunmen stormed the Parliament complex and opened indiscriminate fire, killing nine persons. (ANI)
