Calcutta: Trainer Bharath Singh holds the key to the 2,000m Calcutta Monsoon Derby, Saturday's main attraction in the eight-event card. Four of the seven runners in the Derby line-up hails from Bharath's stable but the two who may matter are Slade Valley (Suraj Narredu-up) and Silverina (Pradip Chauhan).
Slade Valley has been winning his races with ease, albeit over sprints. Although doubts are being raised about his stamina to last the Derby trip, the Rebuttal-Illusive Lady son has Class painted all over. Silverina, on the other hand, is blessed with, both, speed and stamina but she hasn't raced beyond a mile.
Also in contention is trainer Vijay Singh's Snowscape, who, however, is nowhere near his last winter's brilliant form. The easy winner of the 1,600m Calcutta Million was out-classed by Slade Valley in the Colts' Stakes, over 1,400 metres. All said and done, the Derby is going to be a close contest with Slade Valley's superior class having the edge.
