Australia sees largest increase in Indian-origin population in latest census

Sydney, June 21 (ANI): Australia has reported the largest increase in Indian-origin population with an almost 14 percent increase, or 1,50,000 people, since 2006.

According to Herald Sun, the latest population census of Australia revealed that the Punjabi-speaking population in the country boomed by more than 200 percent.

The census showed that India was the third most reported country of birth in Victoria making up to 2.1 percent of the population.

Almost 25 percent of Australians were born overseas, and the UK is still the leading country of birth, New Zealand, China and India were closely behind.

Australia's population has risen to 21,507,719, up almost two million, or more than 8 percent, in the past five years, the census revealed.

Women are dominating the gender balance, with 50.6 percent of the nation's population being female.

Census executive director Andrew Henderson said the results highlighted the cultural diversity of Australia's population.

"Multiculturalism plays a big part in who we are as a nation and we thank all community groups for their participation in the Census, and helping to create a brighter future for all Australians," Henderson said. (ANI)
