MUMBAI, India (AP) _ Indian shares have risen sharply as investors bought up aluminum firm Hindalco Industries Ltd. and blue chip stocks such as Reliance Communications and Larsen & Toubro.
The Bombay Stock Exchange's benchmark 30-stock Sensex went up 375 points, or 2.2 percent, to 17,354 points on Thursday. On the broader National Stock Exchange, the 50-company S&P Nifty index climbed 104 points, or 2.07 percent, to 5,115 points.
Investors snapped up shares of aluminum firm Hindalco Industries Ltd. that closed up 6.1 percent at 204 rupees, followed by telecommunications company Reliance Communications Ltd.
up 5.3 percent at 589 rupees and engineering company Larsen & Toubro Ltd. that advanced 4.7 percent at 2,963 rupees.
Other gainers included petrochemical giant Reliance Industries Ltd. that gained 3.7 percent at 2,623 rupees, followed by banks such as ICICI Bank Ltd.
up 3.6 percent at 929 rupees and State Bank of India up 1.2 percent at 1,681 rupees.
