GENEVA (AP) _ The U.N. refugee agency says two trucks with shelter material for 10,000 cyclone victims in Myanmar have arrived in Yangon. It is the first U.N. aid convoy to reach the Southeast Asian country by land.
The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says the trucks carrying more than 20 tons of tents and plastic sheets came from the Thai-Myanmar border. The agency said Monday the convoy had traveled for two days by road and was accompanied by one of its staff.
It says bad weather had forced the trucks to stop overnight in Hpa-An, north of Mawlamyine. The agency says the truckloads are being handed over to non-governmental organizations for distribution in areas hit by the May 3 cyclone.
