Army chief age row unfortunate: BJP

New Delhi, Feb 10 (IANS) The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday questioned the "silence" of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the row over the age of army chief General V.K. Singh, calling it unfortunate.

"It is a sad incident... An issue which could have been resolved sitting within closed doors has now been dragged in the open before the public," BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters here.

"We hold the centre, the prime minister and Sonia Gandhi responsible for the incident," he said.

Indian Army chief General V.K. Singh suffered a blow Friday in the Supreme Court, forcing him to withdraw his plea that his birth date be treated as May 10, 1951, and not 1950 as the government maintains.

The BJP, however, said the issue raised questions on the government's functioning.

"It is a dangerous thing that even such a row involving the army chief has been dragged into public domain. This is due to the mishandling and wrong policies of the government," he added.

This means your forefathers in the fifties and sixties were the filthiest. This also means that the Congress party is controlling the armed forces and deal with the DOB of the personnel. I am sincerely telling to visit a psychologist if you are an adult. Kabeer, If you are a teenage I forgive you, otherawise ,I advise you to learn history of India espsecially the peariod of our freedom fight from 1857. Wish you good luck.

Something wrong within the Defence Ministry.Xerox copies of his service book should be published. It seems, the incumbent himself manipulated his DOB in service book, or used his power to declare two different DOBs, as and when required.Apart from, the SC judgement, the Govt. shoul follow service book and necessary permission may be obtained from SC.These types of cases are happenning in every State and Central Govt. employees, in terms of thousands, every year. This is high time to stop this malpractice by suitable Ordinance.

he signed thrice on dotted lines because it suited him then. And now, he reneges on his commitment given, quite unlike a good soldier that one expects the chief of army staff to be. He has been admonished by the court( "does not befit of him") and the attorney general refused to consider this an amicable decision, indirectly daring the chief to proceed with the case to conclusion. And this great general claiming to be fighting for honor & integrity failed to muster courage of a great commander who would have preferred to fight from the the deck to the end rather than flee. So friends, this general has been dishonoured and his integrity has been completely demolished. The only way out for him is to resign and not continue in office for its perk and privileges. He is a sitting duck now and surely cannot perform his duties as COAS. His men will least trust him. The only reason for him to continue in office can be his attachment to the spoil of office.Go general go. Please GO. you have shamed us all the veterans.

It is a great blow to BJP. They had instigated the army chief to go to the court. They want to tarnish the defense ministry. But they failed miserably and now they are crying foul. A great shame to main opposition party in our country. Their dignity is now in a downward trend. If they fail to stop it they may even loose the main opposition status.

This Situation generated by Govt. to Provide safe passage for Mr. Manmohansings Relative to become next Army chief. (He is also retiring in this year only). If Mr.Sinha Continues then it is loss of Mr. Manmohansings Relative.

A very very unfortunate incident. The matter could have been sorted out at the PM's level and the real position explained to the Army Chief in a straight discussion. I think we are loosing human elements in our dealings with people- irrespective of the level

The controversy is the making of the Army headed by V.K. Singh. It is a high profile case in which VKS was given a long rope by the govt by engaging in negotiation with him. Had it happened with an ordy army man the matter would have ended in its logical conclusion at the beginning itself.

The Supreme Court has settled the issue. There it ends. The media should avoid discussing such sensitive issue further

As a citizen of India, It is the right of Army chief to get clarification from the highest court of justice in India..As a public I believe it is a bigmistake from Department of Defence Ministry for keeping two different DOB's,(where Army chief also part of it)Army chief could have settle the matter long before without making it is a big issues. Thanks to PM and Defence Minister for handling gently this issues. Its a lesson for all the ministries

For all you guys who are posting anti Gen V K Singh comments.... let me tell you that that the Gen has not lost, rather he has achieved his aim without any embarrassment or loss to his dignity. The Chief has brought it out in the open that promotions in the Army are not wholly and solely on merit but favouritsm plays a major role, and the Government supports it, and thereby this Government is not a Government, it is an enemy of the country, who can, other than looting the nation, can also go to the extent of attempting to lower the prestige, dignity and morale of the army by supporting favouritsm, by promoting Officers who may be otherwise not be competent enough for a Rank. Gen V K Singh as a LT Gen was ordered, forced and blackmailed by the previous Chief to accept his DOB as 1950, which could be on directions of the Government, and that's why today the Govt stands firm, because the Govt possibly was keen on promoting certain Officers.
The court has said that we don't doubt your integrity.... what does this mean... that Gen V K Singh's contention that his DOB is 1951 is true and the court acceps it, but because the Govt has already moved in a certain direction, and now accepting his DOB as 1951 could not only embarass the Govt but more dirty linen would come out in the open. However, I feel the General should step down as a protest against politicisation of the Army, by beaurocrats firing their guns from the shoulders of the Ministers.

It is very unfortunate that now we have even politicized the army. The supreme court has not be un biased because it has just fallen shirt of ratifying the government contention. The writing is on the wall that our revered and so called clean Prime Minister is not so clean and ... after all!!!!

It is pitty people like you are dragging PM into this. If Army chief goes to court inspite of govt relying on the record as submitted by him what the govt and PM has to do.

Depending on whims, the Indian Hon. courts can decline to accept the universally accepted high-school certificate or decline to accept the contender's mere written statement . A recent case example manifests glorifies and testifies this aspect when the Hon’ble UttraKhand High Court at Nainital upheld (after intensive arguments) a reply to a RTI query made in the year 2007 that “an information pertaining to the year 1994 was more than twenty years old in the year 2007” (vide the Writ Petition No.726 of the year 2008) and such a whimsically arbitrary judgment could be given because the Hon’ble courts in India are not obliged to give reasons for their decision or judgment.

its the general who went 2 court...not the govt...i hope the BJP assholes understand this

If one understands what governance means, such comments would not have come. The General was forced to approach Court instead of convincing him within the four walls of the governance. The general appears to be a a good soldier. The general led the army to court and lost. How one feels,, as readers also expected to judge the human psychology in his place. Let us not comment on partisan or party line, and let us not insult the frustrators with our comments. Fair and judicious comments would heal the angers.

If one person, whether it is a Army Chief or any other Official maintains a double date of Birth and forces for one more year of extended service with huge benefits, then every official in the Government will follow the same. What do you people think of the most respected post of a Defence Wing? Now why should the BJP politicize this issue. First of all the General should not have approached the Supreme Court. Now when the SC has declined to entertain this issue, he should retire with honor and not with any remarks. Gen. Singh has served the Army with high distinguished service. By politicizing the issue, it will be a insult to Gen. Singh.

Govt has highly trained and highly paid attroneys to manipulate any case against a single person who can hardly match them in court. What a shame! The issue would have been easily settled, if govt has any respect for the general.

why don't you say...If the general had any respect for the government instead

He was motivated by saffronites, the style involved in the the matter belongs to saffronites. Saffronites did all their level best to paint the government black in this issue but the public psych remained vigilant to radiate their view through all means possible to alert the SC. Sometimes they even had to point out some of the judges malignity in the whole of the issue, when they "unbecoming of a legal professional" I am glad "Indian Army chief General V.K. Singh suffered a blow Friday in the Supreme Court" He should be taught a lesson for becoming so cheap to indulge in supporting political interest of some of the blood thirsty party inspite of knowing fully well what was his original birthday.

You seem to be suffering from Saffromania??? Where has, during the whole issue, Saffron come or side with the General.

The lawyers would have advised the General properly. It is very poor representation by a highest authority in Army.

I feel sad. No, not for the Army Chief losing out in the courts of law. I feel sad for loss of dignity of a very high office. I will love to see the quagmire created by the people concerned including the chief himself to be cleaned up pronto. Let there be no politics please!
