Anand Giridharadas Debuts His Novel: India Calling

The land of opportunity beckons many an Indian with a few ever looking back. For those who do, it’s one of the biggest decisions that is fraught with emotions, and the constant back-and-forth of the “should we or shouldn’t we” return to India. With preferences boiling down to individual decisions, the journey back home is met with mixed emotions. New York Times columnist-turned-author Anand Giridharadas, a second generation immigrant, did just that.

Born in Ohio and brought up in Cleveland and Maryland, Giridharadas works as an analyst for CNN and CBC Radio, besides being a columnist for the NY Times. He also has a background in politics and history. In 2003, he moved to Mumbai as a consultant at McKinsey.

Giridharadas’ latest book India Calling: An Intimate Portrait of a Nation's Remaking explores the changes and discovery of a new India. He told Outlook magazine that his aim was to “speak to Indians as an insider-outsider...to help society choose among the multiple futures available for India.”

This novel, India Calling, marks his return to a new India. The new India that he speaks of is reflective of the collective changes in people’s lives, and this in turn, heralds a change in the nation. The novel is replete with immigrant family history and childhood memories coupled with characters as diverse from entrepreneurs to industrialists and spiritual seekers among others. Through this book, he gives an insight into how relationships are being reinvented between families among others.

The INK Conference recently invited Giridharadas. Watch the video.

good stuff i think i saw this book recently at a book store nad was tempted tobuy it. I always loved indian and wanted to stay in india instead of coming to Us but i did after high school and i always loved india more and more when i was out of it but now after looking at all the corruption by the minister and the weakness of the common peopl to stand up and do something for the resource specially health and security i thinkto myself that do i really want to go back .. what happens where there is a emergency or a health concern... will i get help in india..

So Gujjuguy, there are lots of things that are very different in India from what you are used to in US. I made the transition. It is never what you would expect, and yet you need to really set your expectations right. At the core of this decision is a simple question. Why? Why would you do it? To answer lots of personal values, habits and aspirations need to be examined.

It is the matter of love. It depends how much we love our mother land. Every love demand for sacrifice. If our fore fathers who fought with Birtishers for freedom had thought like us. Even today we would be a slave in the hands of Birtain. Now our Nation. Seeking a second round of freedom. That is freedom from corruption. This only be achieved by sacrefice and sacrefice will come from love. Love as Mother Land. For an spark its size does not really matters its intencity realy matters. We as Indians are laging behind with spark of love towards our mother land, That is the root cause of corruption, unjustice, pooerity and so many other problems

i dont get it indians treating indians bad nad bending backwards for the goras here in USA... Indias are ashamed of other indians for some reason and with the immigration and counsulate dept. of india are worst of all feel just like india no facilities,no polite treatement , no answers to any question nothing....Worst people ever

Do you make the same complaint about having to stand in a line for hours outside American Consulate in India? Some reason people find it acceptable for Americans to mistreat Indians but not acceptable for Indians to mistreat Americans. WHY?
