Afghan national jumps from shopping mall, survives

New Delhi, Feb 23 (IANS) A 28-year-old mentally challenged Afghan national, who had arrived in the city three days ago, jumped off a second floor of a shopping mall in Delhi Thursday in what police said was an attempt to commit suicide.

Mohammed Arif, resident of Herat province in Afghanistan, pushed a security guard to get inside 3C's Mall in south Delhi's Lajpat Nagar which was closed when he jumped off the second at 2.40 a.m. Thursday, additional commissioner of police Ajay Chowdhary told IANS.

He was rushed to All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) trauma centre where he is recuperating.

Police said that the Afghan national appeared "mentally ill".

"As per his landlords statement, he looks like mentally ill," said an official.

The official said Arif was living in a nearby Vinobapuri locality where he had rented a house only three days ago when he arrived in the capital with his sister.

His sister soon returned to Afghanistan.

"His family has been informed. The reason behind his extreme step is yet to be ascertained. Initial investigation revealed that he has been suffering from mental illness and he came here for his treatment," added the official.
