Calcutta, Dec. 7: Calcutta University has asked the panel probing the alleged assault on Trinamul MLA Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay to recommend steps to curb campus agitations and clashes during class hours.
The varsity has asked the two-member panel to submit its report along with the suggestions within 15 days.
The team members ' Sadhan Dasgupta and Arun Chatterjee ' are representatives of the syndicate, the varsity's highest policy-making body.
"There is a need to bring back discipline on our campuses. We are determined to take immediate steps to stop acts of indiscipline and agitations during class hours. We don't want to waste time by setting up another team to suggest measures to maintain peace," vice-chancellor Suranjan Das said today.
Das had on Tuesday suggested framing guidelines to restrict rallies and indiscriminate use of loudspeakers during class hours. The previous day, he had suggested shifting students out of the College Street campus as the varsity had failed to curb agitations.
Yesterday, around 100 members of the All-India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) marched through the College Street campus with blaring loudspeakers, disrupting classes in 13 departments.
Governor M.K. Narayanan, who is the CU chancellor, has advised Das to take prompt action.
"I have discussed the issue with the Calcutta University vice-chancellor and I am keeping track of the situation on the campuses," Narayanan said yesterday.
Das visited Raj Bhavan last evening and had a meeting with the governor. Narayanan asked Das to keep him posted on the progress of the inquiry.
Once the probe panel submits its report to the vice-chancellor, the varsity authorities will forward it to the syndicate.
"After the syndicate endorses the report along with the recommendations, we will send the suggestions to the governor," Das said.
The vice-chancellor added that a copy of the recommendations would also be sent to the higher education department as the government had instructed him to keep it posted on the steps taken to curb class disruption.
Bratya visit plan
Higher education minister Bratya Basu has said he will visit all universities and affiliated colleges in the state from next month to discuss their academic and administrative functioning.
State higher education council chief Sugata Marjit will accompany Basu.
"We will hold discussions with university officials and the principals of the affiliated colleges. We will listen to the problems and demands of the universities and colleges. At the same time, we will explain to them our plans and policies," Basu said.
