59.4 percent turnout in 5th phase of UP polls

Lucknow, Feb 23 (IANS) The fifth round of polling in UP's seven-phased assembly elections in 49 constituencies Thursday witnessed a 59.4 percent turnout, an official said.

"Today's turnout was an impressive 59.4 percent. In fact, it would have gone even higher if more voters had stepped out of their homes in Kanpur, where the polling was 52 percent," state chief electoral officer Umesh Sinha told IANS.

Interestingly, even as the polling remained low in Kanpur, the state's largest city, voters turned out in far larger numbers in smaller towns and rural areas.

"The highest polling was recorded in Lalitpur (the remotest UP district, surrounded by Madhya Pradesh on three sides)," Sinha said.

As many as 829 candidates were in the fray for the 49 seats spread across 13 districts, with an electorate of 1.56 crore and where 17,267 polling centres were set up.

There was heavy police deployment for this phase of polling, which covered a large part of central UP, better known as the state's badlands. While Sinha remained tight-lipped on the numbers, sources confirmed that more than 800 companies of central paramilitary and state armed police (100-120 personnel each) were in place to ensure a smooth, free and fair poll.

"Every polling booth had at least two paramilitary personnel, two state armed cops plus four homeguards," a top police officer disclosed. He, however, declined to divulge how many BSF, CRPF, ITBP or CISF personnel were detailed for poll duties.

Apart from Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's home district Etawah, the other districts which voted Thursday were Mainpuri, Firozabad, Etah, Auraiya, Rama Bai Nagar, Kanshi Ram Nagar, Kanpur, Jhansi, Hamirpur, Lalitpur, Mahoba and Jalaun.

This belt was an acid test for Mulayam Singh Yadav, who is believed to command a lot of influence over both Yadavs and other backward classes in the region. Likewise, the prestige of BJP star campaigner Uma Bharti is also at stake because she was specially brought in from neighbouring Madhya Pradesh in the hope of attracting the Lodhi backward caste community, which has a major presence in large parts of Bundelkhand districts that voted.

While Uma Bharti was in the fray from Charkhari in Hamirpur district, Mulayam Singh Yadav's younger brother Shivpal Yadav was contesting from the family bastion of Jaswant Nagar in Etawah.

Uma Bharti was desperately trying to wean away votes from former BJP leader Kalyan Singh, who was struggling to keep his own stock of Lodhis together under the banner of his Rashtriya Kranti Party (RKP). He had even gone to the extent of throwing a challenge to Uma Bharti by fielding a rival member of the caste against her.

This poll turnout is moderately very good, and surely it is a great pleasure that the UP people have finally used their wisdom and voted heavily to pave paths to a clear majority to our most beloved and respected CM Mayawati ji, whose tenure of past 5 years provided increased growth (over 7%GDP), social harmony, improved infrastructure, education and strengthened the Law & order conditions in UP...

and in next 5 years BSP plans to implement many development projects benefiting both the urban and the rural population and the growth rate could well go beyond 9% GDP ensuring UP becomes most productive and developed State in India... it is a noble journey of this great visionary CM Mayawati ji to bring pride and respect in UP people back again..

UP people are now looking towards the very positive side of modest CM Mayawati, and clearly understand that she is certainly far far ahead a towering personality and is 1000 times better than any mafia goon Mulayam singh running crime syndicates or a country-looter mother-son duo Sonia/Rahul..

you are right, but its farewell a treat for Congress... and after wash out from UP assembly elections, Congress will be wiped out from National scene by next Lok Sabha elections which are very near now.

Dear Pritam , I agree. But fragmented opposition can not choose a single MP as PM. Head of each party will be vying for PM`s post .There will be 10 PMs in 10 months.Cunning Cong will again has the ready slogan - stability versus chaos .

agree with Mr. Pritam as this is a farewell to Congress and just wait till 6th march once the results are declared, to see every one from opposition bending and saluting CM Mayawati... opposition in UP is a bunch of Mafia goons (SP) , a country looter Congress and a communal BJP (whose only agenda is to build a Ram mandir)...

and UP people have shown a great wisdom by voting heavily to give a clear majority to CM Mayawati again to keep all these rogue forces away who are trying to bring obstacle in the path of a progressive UP.

High turnout is an indication of departure of Mayawati from UP.
      • Bpsd 3 months ago
High turnout means a massive majority for CM Mayawati and her party..and a departure of country-looter Congress.
