5 ways to lower your cholesterol

Washington, Feb 09 (ANI): Lowering cholesterol is one of the most imperative things to do to promote overall heart health. And now Metamucil and Dr. Michael Roizen, Chairman of the Wellness Institute at Cleveland Clinic and host of the upcoming PBS series, "Younger You," have suggested five things you need to do to lower your cholesterol.

    Take Psyllium

The first, and one of the simplest tips, is to get more fiber in your diet - but not just any kind, because not all fibers work the same way. Viscous soluble fiber like psyllium fiber, the natural dietary fiber found in Metamucil, is proven to help lower total and "lousy" LDL cholesterol because it forms a thick gel that traps and helps remove some cholesterol, bile acids and waste in the gut. This is why I recommend my patients supplement low fat, low cholesterol diets with 7 grams of soluble fiber from psyllium daily, as in Metamucil.

Wear a Pedometer and Increase Daily Activity

You'd be amazed to see how many extra steps you can take in one day -- grab a pedometer and watch the numbers roll as you make simple changes for your health and take the stairs, walk to work, or stroll around the neighborhood to increase your physical activity for better heart health. Tracking your progress throughout the day can be great inspiration to keep going, and walking is a simple and easy type of exercise to help lower cholesterol!

    Get an Exercise Buddy

A healthy lifestyle requires motivation, encouragement and a friend to lean on. Grab an exercise buddy and support each other in the challenge to lower your cholesterol. Take long walks together and encourage each other to try new types of physical activity to get the heart pumping and to keep cholesterol levels down! Enjoy each other's company and laugh - reduced levels of stress will help your heart too!

Beware of Hidden Fats and Sugars

Be an informed eater; get to know your ingredients and read the nutrition labels thoroughly. Hidden sugars and unhealthy ingredients can increase your weight, which can lead to high cholesterol. Stay away from foods that contain high levels of saturated fat, cholesterol and hidden sources of sugar such as high fructose corn syrup, some dextrins, or evaporated cane juice.

    Add DHA

DHA is short for docosahexaenoic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid. Regular intake of DHA can aid in proper heart function and help lower levels of Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), or the "lousy" cholesterol3, and raise levels of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), or the "healthy" cholesterol. Popular sources of DHA are salmon, sardines, tuna - but if you aren't a seafood fan, try fish oil supplements, or if you don't like fishy taste, et them from vegetarian supplements made from algal DHA. losing weight & reducing cholestrol are two different aspects, although both are good, but latter is more crucial for a healthy lifestyle.

Healing, feeling, sealing and everything has been provided by the nature. Our body doesn't required any additional scientific doses. Just do the hard work physically and eat only organic food and avoid junk food, we will be free from the sugar, cholesterol, pressure. example rikshaw puller, farmer etc.

I doubt whether medicines have any effect in controlling/reducing the level of cholesterol or body weight. Most people believe that decreasing body weight leads to decrease in cholesterol level. This is simply not true.

In early 2007 my body weight was 89 kgs, large build, bulgy stomach, high level of cholesterol.
This was then a major concern to me. So I tried all kinds of medicines upto late 2009 but getting absolutely no result. In October 2009 I was 87 kgs with high level cholesterol.

Frustrated with the money and time spent as such both in medicine and exercise, I quit both and followed a new plan. This was as below and am continuing from Oct 2009 till now.

      1. Waking up at 8-8:30 AM, taking one litre water before brush.
      2. Breakfast : Compulsory bath, two spoonful honey, one carrot, banana, apple, (Chew).
      3. Lunch : 12-1:00 PM, rice with vegetables, no curry, spicy items.
      4. Tiffin : 4-5:00 PM : Noodles.
      5. Dinner : Rice with vegetables, no curry/spicy items.

      Others :
      1. No tea, Cofee, any sugar items.
      2. Running rather than walking, be it as less as 10 meters or so.
      3. Taking multivitamins with Zn supplements.
      4. No fried items, no food taking outside, no Bada, Samosa, Egg, Meat or anything.
      5. Eating raw vegetables more often.
      6. Drinking water as much as possible.
      7. Always keeping the bowel moving, no empty stomach.

      Result :
More flexible body, Active mind to run than walk, Slim figure, flat stomach,

Cholesterol level : Reduced from high to moderate.
      Weight : 69 kgs.

Very informative article could be even better if daily intake is specified
or better still what not to cosume.

      1) early to rise and a good 1/2 an hour walk
      2)breakfast of oats/cornflakes
3)plenty of water (not cold) 1/2 an hour after breakfast
4)lunch with low fat without Ghee and a Fruit
      5) evening some snacks without oil prepsor a couple of biscuits
6)lihgt dinner with a warm glass of skimmed milk or chaas
do not eat inbetween meals if you have to try badam and wallnuts.
During dinner take one petal of garlic slightly hold over flame and eat raw
Give up NE form of tabacco or beetle nut, and moderarate amt. of alcohol

The common Indian does not know much of alpha and omega and all these scientific terms. What is known is that one should have a simple and regular diet with or without meat and so regular exercise. Brisk walking for about 4 to 5 kilometers every day will do the trick. Lets do it.
    • Raam  •  1 year 3 months ago
The article does not seem to be helpful for a common man to follow. Most of the terms used were strange and rarely used as routine. Frankly speaking I could not make head or tail of it and my cholesterol will remain same in spite of this unreadable article.

Thanks! one needs to follow it on regular basis.
We can make effort but for vegetarians the substitute for fish is unknown.

    • Rajeev  •  1 year 3 months ago
Search on Google with words 'cholesterol scam' and you will know how the whole thing is promoted by drug makers. Look at the first recommendation in this article. It is about a medicine. Time to wake up.
