After staying unbeaten in six matches in a row in the I-League, United FC had yet another good outing on Friday, this time beating Salgaocar SC by a brace at Barasat Stadium. With today's convincing 2-0 win, United FC advanced to the top of the standings. They are now on 15 points from seven matches while the Goan side lag far behind on the 10th spot with six points from seven outings.
Brazilian striker Edmar Joshimar struck the day's two goals, in the 52nd and 68th minute, courtesy Salgaocar's poor defensive show. The first goal came off a faulty clearing from the Salgaocar custodian off a an Edmilson left-footer. The opportunistic Joshimar pounced on the opportunity and converted. And in the 68th minute, Joshimar struck again, this time making the most of a faulty pass from Gurpreet Singh in the goal area. With the twin strikes, Joshimar is now the leading scorer in the championship, with seven goals.
Midfielder Jayanta Sen, who was picked Man-of-the-Match, didn't play from the deep in today's match. Instead, he moved up and operated from the middle-third and came up with several attacking moves.
