The state Congress has set a target of 17 lakh new members by the first half of this month, AICC secretary in-charge of GPCC Sudhakar Reddy said on Wednesday. He has come to the state to expedite the slow drive in a bid to achieve its intended target.
AICC general secretary in-charge of Gujarat, Oscar Fernandes will visit the state shortly to oversee the progress of the drive, he added.
Reddy said that two lakh members have been enrolled till date in response to the dispatch of seven lakh forms to the interiors of the state.
Reddy held long parleys with GPCC president Siddharth Patel over the membership enrolment drive and on ways to speed up the process.
He said the drive has been initiated at the booth committee level which will function under the taluka committees. The latter will function under the pradesh committee.
He said once the enrolment drive is completed, the registration of booth, taluka and district unit members will be formed to appoint delegates to district and PCC from these booths.
The 40,000 polling booths in the state will send representatives to choose delegates. Returning Officers will be appointed at all levels to ensure a fair and transparent conduct of the elections, he added.
'Get well' wish for ModiReddy has wished Chief Minister Narendra Modi a speedy recovery. Modi has been tested positive with swine flu.
He said: "I wish him a fast recovery, and take over the state's administrative responsibility."
