VVIP visits to keep police on their toes this week

The Chandigarh Police will be on their toes this week, as numerous VVIPs are scheduled to visit the city. Starting Monday, the President, the Prime Minister and four Union Ministers are expected to visit the city.

Besides, the Indian and Australian cricket teams, which are being provided Z plus security cover, have reached the city.

The hectic week for the police and the Administration begins with the arrival of Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Monday. Pawar will be in the city to watch the fourth ODI at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Mohali.

General N C Vij (retd), Chairman of the Prime Minister's Disaster Management Committee and Governor of Nagaland, will also be in the city on Monday.

Then Union Tourism Minister Kumari Selja will visit the city for the closing ceremony of the first National Crafts Mela at Kalagram.

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is also expected to visit the city in this week, though his visit is not confirmed yet, officials said.

Chandigarh MP and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal will also be in the city to oversee preparations for the Prime Minister's visit on November 3. Dr Singh will visit the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), and the Panjab University, where a special convocation is being organised for him.

The weekend will be equally hectic for the police, as President Pratibha Patil will attend a function in the city, before proceeding to Amritsar to attend a function of Nanhi Chhaan Foundation.

The President is also expected to visit social welfare centres, including Senhalya and Ashreya, managed by the UT Administration.

"Yes, it's going to be a hectic week, but the city police and administration are prepared. SPG and NSG teams have already inspected the locations of VVIP visits and our men are on alert," a senior UT official said. "It's a matter of pride for the city to have these frequent VVIP visits."
