Buddha has his way: 50 acres each for Infosys, Wipro in Rajarhat

Days after the West Bengal Information and Technology department announced the scrapping of an IT park project with Infosys and Wipro in Rajarhat New Town, Chief Minister Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today put his foot down at a Left Front meeting, saying the state needed to retain the two IT majors.

Hours later, Housing Minister Gautam Deb said Infosys and Wipro would be provided 50 acres each in Rajarhat, outside the controversial Vedic Village area.

Bhattacharjee, who is likely to make a formal announcement tomorrow, told a Left Front committee meeting that the IT park project may have got scrapped but his government wanted Infosys and Wipro to set up units in Bengal. "We will have to provide them land," he told the meeting. LF partners were said to have backed his proposal.

"Wipro and Infosys are not going to be given land in that controversial area where the Vedic Village owners acquired vast tracts. They will be given land elsewhere within the Rajarhat township. They had asked for 50 acres, we will give them that much land. They may get more later. I have had talks with the CM," Deb said.
