To promote research, India plans meet on Lindau line

Impressed with the annual meet in Lindau, Germany, during which students get the opportunity to interact with Nobel laureates, India is planning to launch a similar initiative in the country.

"We are considering a Lindau meet-like initiative in which students will get to interact with Nobel laureates for a week or so. To start with, the Indian Institute of Information Technolgy (IIIT) at Allahabad will be hosting a six-day event from December 15 to 20 this year to motivate students to take to research. Twelve Nobel laureates are expected to attend the meet and several hundred students from across the country will be selected to participate in the event," R P Agarwal, Secretary Higher Education in the Ministry of HRD, told The Indian Express.

"The idea is to hold regular meets like the Lindau one to inspire students to take up research work. Research is a highly neglected area in India and very few students opt for it. Events modelled on the Lindau meet will be able to inspire and draw students to R&D," added Agarwal.

The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings provide a globally recognised forum for the transfer of knowledge between generations of scientists.
