Raipur, July 18 (IANS) About 1,200 people of a tribal village in Chhattisgarh have moved to safer places Friday to avoid a night of fury of a wild elephant that has razed a dozen houses and killed an elderly woman.

The residents of a forested village, Jamna, in Surguja district have spent sleepless nights the past three days as a wild elephant has been creating trouble there, officials said.

Following the havoc the wild elephant has been creating since Monday, the villagers left the houses and moved out, officials added.

Local forest officials said the elephant was probably stranded from a group of tuskers from a nearby Jharkhand area and created trouble in Tapkara area of state's northern Surguja district.
