Drunk boys 'molest' girls at Gurgaon college fest

Gurgaon, Nov. 6 -- A group of drunken students of a private institute here, allegedly molested fellow girl students during a college fest on November 1. The incident took place at Guragon Institute of Technology and Management (GITM), at Bilaspur village, just off National Highway-8. Eyewitnesses said local toughs, who had come to attend the fest, accompanied the drunk students and they passed lewd remarks at the girls. "The incident took place on November 1 when singer Ashok Mastie left the stage after his performance around 7pm. A group of about 50 men, most of whom were drunk, started passing lewd remarks at the girls," said a student, on condition of anonymity. When the girls objected, the men grabbed the girls and molested them in the lawn. Many girls were dragged out from the buses thry had boarded to go home, the student alleged. "What made matters worse was the fact that all the while the institute staff stood there as mute spectators. The dozen-odd private security guards also failed to react. Nobody came forward to help," said another student, on condition of anonymity. The girls were threatened with dire consequences if they approached the police, said another student who was present during the incident. Therefore, they did not file a complaint. "Even the college management has failed to report the matter to the police as they don't want their institute to earn a bad name," said another student who was present on the spot when the incident took place. It was only on Friday, the GITM management suspended four erring engineering students and served them show-cause notices. "The issue is not that serious. It is simply a case of eve-teasing and ragging," said G.K. Sethi, GITM board member.

He claimed there was no instance of molestation. "None of the girls have complained of molestation. However, we have suspended four engineering students and would terminate them if we find them guilty. They are still to respond to the show-cause notices that we have sent them," Sethi added. Alok Mittal, joint commissioner of police, said the incident of misbehavior with the girls had been brought to his notice by GITM. "Unfortunately we have not received a formal complaint either from the students or from the college," the officer said.
