Law school wins Premchand debate

New Delhi, Nov. 6 -- National Law School (NLS), Bangalore, won the 7th Premchand Memorial Debate held at Hindu College in partnership with Hindustan Times, on Friday. The finalists -Hansraj College, Delhi and National law School, Bangalore - debated on the topic, "It's fair for the government to make rural internship compulsory for medical students." The two teams that made it to the finals were among 36 teams from across the country, and two from Bangladesh.

While the team from NLS argued for the motion, Hansraj College argued against it. The NLS students debated that since the state spent its money and resources on medical students, it was their moral responsibility to serve the state by doing internship in rural areas. The team from Hansraj College argued that forcing someone to do something never works. Instead, the government should give medical students incentives to motivate them to work in rural areas. A prize money of Rs 85,000 was handed over to the winners in various categories. "It feels great to win such a prestigious debate. We are taking back the trophy to our college after four years. that it was a very well-organised debate," said Manav Kumar who along with Abhimanyu George Jain from NLS took home a winner's cheque worth Rs 30,000.

Among the winners in other categories were Vipul Nanda, who was adjudged the best speaker, and Ishan Ghosh-all from NLS- was named the best adjudicator.
