Looking for a job? Join the Games brigade

New Delhi, Nov. 6 -- There might be a general slump in the job market owing to the economic slowdown. But there is one agency which seems to have been untouched by the general job slump. In the run up to the Commonwealth Games - that Delhi would be hosting in October next year - the Games Organising Committee (OC) is on a hiring spree.

Job market finds its groove

It is looking for interested professionals - both in the government and corporate sector - who are willing to join and help in the successful organisation of the games. At present the OC has 450 staff on it rolls but this, officials said, is woefully short to meet the requirement. "We will need a total of 1,500 to 1,600 paid staff at the Organising Committee," said Randhir Singh, vice chairman of the OC. The committee has set aside a budget of Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) to meet the existing and proposed manpower cost. "This budget is specifically to meet the physical manpower required for the games," said a senior OC official who did not want to be quoted, as he isn't authorised to speak to media.

The committee has written to the government requesting for officials on deputation. "There are 34 functional areas like accommodation, catering, ticketing, etc., where we need additional manpower. We need professionals with the right experience and attitude to work in diverse fields, such as games services, venue operations, logistics and technology," said Singh.

The OC has also written to the Army requesting for officers to join them on deputation. "We have already started recruiting. The process would be completed in the next 2-3 months," said an official.

"The job in the OC is for a limited period. Not many from the corporate sector are willing to quit their job and join here for just a year. That's why we have now written to the government to send people on deputation," said the official.
