Patna, Nov. 5 -- Amarnath Gupta is a chemistry teacher in a college under Magadh University.

He is also a leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party and even fought elections once. And he is the kingpin of a car theft racket.

The professor's arrest from his residence on Tuesday blew the lid off a racket, involving sale of stolen second-hand cars, especially sports utility vehicles. The secret life of Gupta, who used to teach in Guru Gobind Singh College here, came to an end when Raju Kumar, a resident of Bhabua in Kaimur district, lodged a first information report, alleging that Gupta had sold him a second-hand Scorpio with forged documents.

Kumar soon detected discrepancies in the engine and chassis numbers and returned the vehicle and asked for a refund. Gupta refused.

The police first arrested a confectionary shop-owner, Girija Prasad Keshri and later raided Gupta's residence. Magadh University Vice Chancellor B.N. Pandey, said, "The teacher will be immediately suspended if he is involved in car theft.

Action will be initiated as soon as we get the report.".
