A dash of quirk

Mumbai, Nov. 2 -- Plastic fringes, thread reels and nimboo-mirchi danglers - jewellery made of never-heard-before materials found its place on the recently concluded Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010. Ritesh Kumar Ridzyn teamed futuristic jewellery along with his clothes. "My logic of putting sequins in plastic tubes and making jewellery out of it was to save these sequins. I think they might become a rarity in future. I haven't used any glue and instead stuck them inside with the help of oil. I have designed hand cuffs, neckbands and anklets that range between Rs 3,000 and Rs 5,000." If that wasn't funky enough, designer duo Hemant and Nandita's resort collection was fused with jewellery that had beads in the shape of lemon and chilly strands. "I've used feathers as well as nimboo and mirchi in bright metallic colours. The idea was to add a tinge of India in a collection that's otherwise quite western." Nandita had hair accessories, neckpieces and earrings in the price range of Rs 500 and Rs 3,000.

Some designers added jewellery just to style their line and Poonam Bhagat's Taika range was just one of those. "It was our idea to join together motley-coloured thread reels to form bracelets and chunky chokers. In fact, some of the models so loved them that they kept what they wore."
