Tuesday saw DU sending yet another message to smokers. The DUSU office hosted a nukkad naatak by the group Ahwaan on the ills of smoking.
Ritesh Sharma, director-producer of the group, was optimistic about the campaign. "Even ifwe can influence 10 people, it means we've saved 10 lives.
" Amrita Bahri, DUSU president, asked the police to set an example by quitting tobacco themselves. Soon after, a leader from the opposition party walked in with his lackeys circling him.
He came, he saw, he left. The chief guest, Union health minister Anbumani Ramadoss, came on stage to preach about the ills of "smoking, alcohol, drugs and junk food".
After a brief tussle with the mike, he continued talking about plans of setting up a rehabilitation centre on campus in the next two months as well as imposing a ban on smoking in all public and private buildings starting October 2. A group of girls from Miranda House didn't show any enthusiasm.
"We don't think such campaigns make any difference. Miranda is a smoke-free zone though," said one of them.
"Well, except the loos and the lobbies. But most of the smoke from Miranda goes to D-School," they joked as they headed to and #8230; where else but D-School.
If you are young, have a hectic social life where you drink and party, and have applied for a job, chances are you will lose out to someone who is a teetotaler.
