Three years ago Ankur Sharma may have chosen another college to pursue his studies and would have settled for some lesser-known college, taking up a course or subject he didn't want to study. But today this resident of Indirapuram in Ghaziabad is a student of Kirori Mal College in Delhi University's north campus.
"Metro provides a comfortable ride. I do not get stuck in traffic jams and reach my college on time.
If it were not for the metro, I would be studying in some college near my house," Ankur said. A cool and comfortable ride on rolling stock, cycles to traverse around and feeder buses to take you to nearby areas, commuting in north campus is now far easier than it used to be three years back.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's (DMRC) line between Central Secretariat-Vishwavidyalaya has become the part of Delhi University (DU) life. Connectivity and transportation play a very important part while students select colleges during the admission time.
Earlier the only economical way to reach DU north campus was buses. Not only were the buses time consuming, many good students had to give up studying in best colleges of the area a miss because of sheer distance.
But now even students from far-flung areas are thronging the campus. Ridership on this route is rising every year.
Besides a comfortable and cool ride in the Metro, the DMRC also provides a cheap ride to students to traverse around the campus as well. Their cycle stand, outside the Vishwavidyalaya Station, has found many takers among the fitness-crazy DU students.
"We are renting out on an average around 30 cycles per day. After the colleges reopened, the demand has gone up," said Chote Lal Gupta, who looks after the metro's cycle stand.
The third service Metro provides is the feeder buses. Earlier it had started their feeder service from Vishwavidyalaya station to near by areas, but nothing for travelling inside the campus.
Many students want the metro's feeder buses to start plying within the campus. "Sometimes I do not have time to walk all the way to my college.
It would be of great help if the metro's feeder buses were started inside the campus," said Sandeepan, a student of Ramjas College. Talking to Hindustan Times, DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said, "It could be considered in future after we have more buses and we get the required permission.
We are getting around 300 more buses in a phased manner. Right now all our 100 buses are running full capacity.
So we do not have any plans of introducing buses inside the campus route as of now.".
