While students of most Delhi colleges are busy mugging up books, those belonging to Maulana Azad Medical College are introduced to the operation theatre right from second year - even though a few have fainted on the first encounter. Ranked by a national magazine as the fifth best medical college in the country, the college is a lot more than a mere collection of future doctors.
Right at the entrance is a statue that most students haven't been able to make head or tail out of. The recent revamp has seen the college get a facelift with everything from the auditorium to the hostels getting a makeover.
The college has four hospitals attached to it that makes finding your way around a tad bit difficult. Abhilekh, a student says, "At first, we are as lost as the patients.
But our lab coats and the stethoscope often lead them to mistake us for full-fledged doctors." The popular hangout zones include the Gazebo that offers a stunning view of the lawns and the fountains.
There is an amphitheatre mostly frequented by the college couples. The library as well as the reading room is fully air-conditioned.
So are the classes, sorry, the LTs (Lecture Theatres). Hostel residents are classified as 'chronic' or 'acute'.
The 'chronics' are the real hostellers, who are from outside Delhi and therefore permanently there. The 'acutes' are mostly day-scholars who come and go.
Students often pass time playing basketball, cricket or tennis. There is a lot to choose from in terms of eating places with UCH, 2-4-H, CCD, the Amul canteen and the Nescafe stall competing for attention.
However Nescafe, because of its vast seating, is the most popular chilling joint. Various dhabas like the 'Ashoka Hotel' are frequented during the night.
Also popular is the chhola-kulcha walla bhaiya who sits under the tree in front of the Old Boys' Hostel. There are two annual festivals.
The first is 'Goonj' that includes only three medical colleges and is relatively small scale. The second, 'Synapse', sees various DU colleges.
The inaugural play organised by the dramatic society, N2O is always trusted for bringing out the college gossip. Also popular is 'Fash', the fashion show competition that is a fusion of sarees and mini-skirts.
It also witnesses rain-dance that sees a lot of wet and wild frolicking.
