An ancient dope test

As a District and Additional Sessions Judge, interested in the long history of crime, I'd like to share a story I heard about a sort of narco-analysis test used in the time of Bhagvan Mahavira in solving criminal cases. There was a great thief.

He had only one son whom he was training in his art. He warned him, "Listen, whatever you do, don't go close to that man Mahavira.

Though I am a master thief, I avoid him, because he is dangerous. Something magical surrounds him, and once you are caught in it there is no way out.

" For a long time, the son took good care to avoid the place where Mahavira stayed with his disciples. But one day, out of curiosity he went a little close and overheard one sentence.

Mahavira was saying that in paradise, the angels were tremendously beautiful but their feet pointed backwards. That very night he and his father were both caught stealing.

It was impossible to get any information from the father, so the king said, "Let's concentrate on the son." The boy was given intoxicating drugs and slept for hours.

He was taken to the most beautiful room in the palace and when he awoke, he found beautiful girls serving him food and drink. He thought he was dead and in paradise.

But when he looked at their feet, he understood that there was some conspiracy. The women tried hard to persuade him, "You are indeed dead and in paradise.

This is just the reception. Before you enter the real paradise, you need to confess all the sins that you and you father have committed, for which you have never been caught.

" But he said, "Tell your king to fool somebody else. I am a disciple of Mahavira.

" They asked, "When did you become one?" He said, "Just passing by, I heard one sentence and that has saved me today." And because there was no proof, the pair had to be finally released.

The boy became a reformed and devoted disciple of Mahavira thereafter.
