Britain: Indian tourists outspend Americans

Indian tourists, now outspend their US counterparts in Britain, thanks to the booming Indian economy. Tourist chiefs now view India as the most important developing market for the next decade.

The average American tourist spent and #163;710 in Britain last year while the average Indian spent and #163;793. More visitors still come from the US than from India, but the number of Indian travellers rose 50 per cent to 367,000 in 2006.

If this growth continues, the number of visitors may overtake the American number as well, tourism officials said. Indians have helped retailers hurt by the economic downturn.

"They at least helped in keeping the credit crunch from actually forcing itself on our throats," said a Marks and amp; Spencer store floor manager. Lord Bikhu Parekh, economist and Asian affairs expert, said, "The new rich Indians are taking Britain in their stride.

Even those going to Europe or the US usually pass through Britain.".
