Daler sings Mahabharat

He's known for his Ta ra ra ra and Na na na re, but Daler Mehndi is now singing an entirely different tune. The Bhangra icon is set to lend his voice to the title track of Ekta Kapoor's Kahani Hamaaray Mahaabhaarat Ki on 9X. BR Chopra and Ravindra Jain's traditional theme for Mahabharat is still remembered by millions of viewers.

But Daler isn't feeling the pressure. "Ravindra Jain is a great composer and his Mahabharat was very successful.

I liked it a lot myself. But Lalit Sen has scored the music for the new Mahaabhaarat and I have full faith in him, since he's the best by far on the small screen.

The song tells the story of Mahabharat for this generation.

and has the sanctity of Sanskrit shlokas.

" Daler has sung a Sufi qawwali Ru-ba-ru for Maqbool and even for South Indian movies, but he is best known for his foot-tapping Bhangra music. Singing for such an epic is a huge departure for the star.

"I feel that I'm blessed to be able to do so much variety," he says, "and specially a great granth like this one. I think this series will also run for four or five years.

" Because of the strong Punjabi tag associated with Mehndi, there were diction experts present at the recording but, "they told me that my diction was just fine." Daler says his favourite character from the epic is Lord Krishna.

"But I can't play that because of my appearance, so I guess the role of a turban-sporting rishi muni would be nice.".
