The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) plans to enhance the green cover of Delhi in preparation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. A budget of Rs 34.23 lakh has been allocated for the purpose.
"The funds have already been used to plant two lakh saplings, buy machinery, beautify parks, roundabouts and repair tubewells," said Ved Prakash Gupta, Chairman, Garden Committee of the MCD. Gupta said Rs 3.62 crore would be used to refurbish parks and carry out landscaping work. Other allocations will cover irrigation, installation of 128 tubewells, 10,000 steel benches in parks and lighting.
Mayor Arti Mehra said part of the funds would help rid MCD parks of encroachment. "Other than parks, roundabouts and the space under flyovers will be developed with the purpose of beautifying as well as keeping encroachers away," Mehra said.
