Health dept asks seeks police help

AFTER TWO consecutive incidents of violence by locals with the polio team, health department officials have upped their ante and asked the cops to punish offenders and help them during the drive. Health officials have even lodged a complaint with the Talkatora police station demanding action against RP Singh, a resident of Rajajipuram, who had reportedly slapped a member of the polio team on Tuesday.

"We have asked cops to help us and nab the offender. We have also instructed our vaccinators to try and avoid scuffle with residents.

We have asked the vaccinators to simply mark houses as resistant wherever parents try to hide children and resist vaccination," said Dr Uttam Kumar, the deputy CMO (vaccination). He said the act of violence by residents could be a result of sustained campaign in the region.

"With the campaign running for the past many years and the vaccinators knocking on doors every second month, people get irritated. However, this will not stop us from running the drive to vaccinate each and every child.

People need to understand the importance of the campaign," he said while claiming the campaign is running normally even in Rajajipuram. "Fortunately, no case of polio has been detected in the state capital since 2006.

But, the city is in the high risk category.
