WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) American cyclist Floyd Landis finished seventh in Friday's seventh stage of the nine-stage Tour of Southland, improving to 14th place on general classification. Landis produced his best stage finish of the six-day tour on the 163.6-kilometer (102-mile) leg between Winton and Te Anau on New Zealand's South Island, finishing only four seconds behind stage winner Patrick Bevan.

The result lifted Landis from 29th after six stages to 14th place, 11 minutes, 56 seconds behind leader Heath Blackgrove of New Zealand. New Zealander Marc Ryan was second, 11 seconds behind Blackgrove.

Jack Bauer, the overnight leader on general classification, was third. Landis was among the leading group throughout Friday's stage and was able to hold on to a prominent placing in a sprint finish.

The tour concludes with two stages Saturday. Landis won the 2006 Tour de France but was disqualified and banned for two years when doping tests revealed elevated levels of testosterone.

He returned to racing in January.
