Landis 36th in NZ road race, CYC

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) Floyd Landis was placed 36th, more than 11 minutes behind the overall leader Jack Bauer, after the fifth stage of the Tour of Southland cycling race on New Zealand's South Island Wednesday. Landis was credited with 69th place among the 105 riders who completed the 88.4-kilometer fourth stage Wednesday morning and was officially 52nd of 102 riders who finished the 101.7-kilometer fifth stage.

He was 8 minutes, 14 seconds behind fifth stage winner Gordon McCauley of New Zealand. New Zealander Bauer led the race on general classification after five stages.

New Zealanders Marc Ryan and Jeremy Vennell were second and third on overall standings in the six-day, nine-stage race which ends Saturday. Landis's New Zealand-based Cyclingnzshop.

com-BioSport team was 13th of 23 teams. The American cyclist won the 2006 Tour de France but was disqualified and banned for two years when doping tests revealed elevated levels of testosterone.

He returned to race riding in January.
