LUCKNOW, India (AP) Eleven people are dead after a train slammed into a truck at an unmanned railway crossing in northern India. Police say nearly two dozen others were injured in Sunday's accident.
Police official A. Padmaja says the truck was transporting Hindu pilgrims to participate in a religious festival in Uttar Pradesh state. The accident occurred in Gonda district, 95 miles (150 kilometers) southeast of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state.
India has one of the largest railroad networks in the world and carries more than 14 million passengers each day. Accidents are common, and most are blamed on poor maintenance and human error.
