WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) _ The New Zealand Rugby Union has ruled Steve Hansen cannot coach the Canterbury Crusaders and work with the All Blacks at the same time. Hansen sought dispensation to apply for the Crusaders' Super 14 position, vacated by new Australia coach Robbie Deans, while maintaining his role as an All Blacks co-coach with Wayne Smith and Graham Henry.
The board of the New Zealand union ruled Sunday that it would not stretch or alter its rules to allow Hansen's request. "The board indicated that it felt both roles required a dedicated focus and out of respect for Steve and, in particular, what he contributes to the All Blacks environment it was felt that he needed to be focused on one rather than two teams," union chief executive Steve Tew said.
"The decision also reflected the board's regard for Steve not only as an All Blacks assistant coach, but also as a team selector, an asset that would have been lost to the All Blacks in the dual coaching proposal." Hansen said he was disappointed but understood the reasons for the board's decision.
The former Wales coach is expected to succeed Henry as New Zealand head coach before the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
