SEOUL, South Korea (AP) _ A South Korean court sentenced a former business partner of President Lee Myung-bak to 18 more months in prison Friday for falsely accusing Lee of fraud during last year's presidential campaign, an official said. Kim Kyung-jun, a Korean-American businessman, was convicted of violating election laws and forging documents, according to Lee Seung-ho, a spokesman at Seoul Central District Court.
Kim was accused of giving prosecutors forged documents showing Lee colluded with him in a 2001 fraud case. The accusation dogged the president during the campaign, but he has since been cleared by prosecutors and an independent counsel.
Critics say Kim was used by Lee's rivals ahead of the December presidential election. Kim has already been sentenced to 10 years in prison with a fine of 15 billion won (US$14 million) in the fraud case, in which he was charged with rigging stock prices and embezzlement at an investment company and fleeing to the United States with the ill-gotten gains.
He was extradicted from the United States last November. Lee had earlier partnered with Kim to set up a separate Internet financial company.
Kim has appealed the earlier ruling and has one week to appeal Friday's decision, according to the district court.
