Margao, Nov 8 (PTI) Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Shilton Paul''s fine saves denied Sporting Clube De Goa their first win as they were held to a 2-2 draw in the seventh round of the ONGC I-League at Nehru stadium here today. Sporting Clube, who dominated major part of the match, took the lead in the 23rd minute through Nathaniel Amos which was cancelled out by Branco Vincent Cardozo in the 33rd minute.
Marcos Pereira then put Bagan ahead in the 42nd minute but man of the match Joseph Pareira equalised in the 43rd minute. Both the teams started at slow pace but the tempo picked up in the second half with Sporting showing lot of urgency in their attack as they piled up pressure into the rival defence from the left.
Joseph Pereira, who was more enterprising on the left, troubled the Mohun Bagan rival defence and came near scoring twice in the second half, only to fail to beat Paul. Sporting who played a lone striker in the absence of injured Elijah Junior went ahead in the 23rd minute.
Nathaniel Amos intercepted the ball from defender Rakesh Masih which was backpassed by Deepak Mondal, raced into the box, positioned himself and beat keeper Paul with a high shot to find the back of the net. The goal served as wake-up call for Bagan who regrouped and went into the attacking mode with a series of moves and equalised in the 33rd minute.
