Biocon to partner firms in seven nations

Mumbai, Nov 5 (PTI) Biotech firm Biocon today said it will have local partnership in seven countries, including Russia and China, for increasing its market share, a top company offical said. "We always look for local partnership to expand our research and services.

"We plan to increase marketshare through local partnership in E7 countries (Brazil, Russia, China, Mexico, Turkey, China and India)," Biocon Chairman and Managing Director Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw told reporters on the sidelines of Bioinvest 2009 here today. The company plans to set up a new tablet manufacturing plant by 2010, Shaw said, adding Biocon has no plan to hive- off its research and development (R&D) arm, Biocon Research Limited.

Biocon Research Limited is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Biocon Limited. "We have created a separate business arm -- Biocon Research -- from the tax saving and SEZ point of view," Shaw added.

Biocon Research was formed with an intention to make it a profit centre, she said. Shaw said its all research programmes are internally funded but when taken to the next level, the company would look for licensing partners.

Biotechnology for India is important, a big economic growth enabler, Shaw said, adding that she saw most life-saving drugs and vaccines coming from bio-technology. (MORE) PTI KCJ HV JJ.
