Meat traders withdraw strike

Thu, Nov 5 04:08 PM

New Delhi, Nov 5 (PTI) The meat traders in the national capital today withdrew their nearly fortnight-long strike after the Supreme Court ticked them off for refusing to shift to the new slaughter house at Ghazipur and the authorities assured them of providing more facilities at the unit. The traders had closed their shops in protest after the MCD shut down the 200-year-old Idgah slaughter house under an apex court order and shifted all operations to Ghazipur.

The agitators had claimed the new abattoir lacks adequate facilities and has less than required capacity. "The strike has been withdrawn and most of the meat shops in the city are now open.

The traders will start going to the Ghazipur livestock market from Saturday," Mohd Qureshi, the president of Delhi Meat Merchants Association, told PTI. A spokesman of All India Jamiatul Quresh, an umbrella group of largely meat-trading Quresh community, said an "in-principle" decision to lift the strike has been taken at a meeting of the traders here late last night. Both of them said the legal battle on the issue will continue.

"The Supreme Court will taken up our plea against the closure of Idgah slaughter house on November 18. If we go on with the strike, it will affect the financially weaker section among the traders," the Jamiatul spokesman said.

Chicken prices had shot up and meat supply tumbled in the city due to the strike. (More) PTI SDG.
