New Delhi, Nov 5 (PTI) Delhi Metro has been witnessing a considerable increase in passengers in the past two days, thanks to the increased fares in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses. The new fare system in DTC which came into effect from yesterday is keeping the Metro cash registers ringing for the second consecutive day today.
DMRC officials said there was an increase of at least 50,000 footfalls on the Metro yesterday. A total of 9.3 lakh people opted for the transport system yesterday generating a revenue of Rs 1.10 crore.
On an average week day, the ridership will be around 8.5-8.6 lakh and the revenue would be around Rs one crore. Till 8 pm today, a total of 7.41 lakh people took the Metro generating a revenue of Rs 94 lakh.
Last week, the same day 7.35 lakh people took the metro till 8 pm. DMRC officials attribute the sudden increase to the increased DTC fares.
But, this may not last long as the DMRC is planning to effect a hike in its fare. Sources said the fare hike may come into effect from next week when the DMRC expects to inaugurate the much-awaited 13.1 km long Yamuna Bank-Noida link.
The minimum fare may go up from the existing Rs 6 to Rs 8 while the maximum may go up to Rs 32 from the current Rs 22. This will be the second time the DMRC will increase its fare since its launch in 2007.
