Lucknow, Nov 4 (PTI) Days after sugarcane farmers blocked a train carrying imported raw sugar, the Uttar Pradesh Government has advised sugar mills and the Railways not to transport such imports into the state till the situation cools off. "We have advised the Railways and the sugar mills to suspend transportation of imported raw sugar for couple of weeks till the situation normalises," UP Cane Commissioner Sudhir Bobade told PTI here today.

He said the advice had been issued on the law and order grounds. "(Sugar) being a free trade, we can only request," Bobade added.

Sources said following the advice, a consignment of raw sugar being brought to Barabanki from Kota was stopped at the state border and was reverted back. Hundreds of farmers led by Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) had on Sunday blocked a goods train carrying 26,000 quintals of raw sugar imported from Brazil, at Shamli railway station in Muzaffarnagar in Western UP demanding that the imported commodity be sent back.

The farmers were agitating against the State Advised Price (SAP) and Fair and Remunerative Prices (FRP) announced by the state and the Centre respectively. They even threatened to burn the imported sugar if it is not sent back.

"We will not allow the import of raw sugar in UP and if the sugar is not sent back, we will burnt it," BKU leader Rakesh Tikait had said. .
